Many courses at Oxford and Cambridge require applicants to take admissions tests, as well as all applicants to UK law and medical schools. These are important aspects of the application process, used to decide which candidates are invited for interviews and to determine who will be offered places. The MAT lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes and is sat under timed conditions.

How many questions are on the MAT?

Which questions you answer in the MAT will depend on the course you are applying for.

Mathematics, Mathematics and Statistics, and Mathematics and Philosophy applicants should attempt questions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Mathematics and Computer Science applicants should attempt questions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6

Computer Science and Computer Science and Philosophy applicants should attempt questions 1, 2, 5, 6, 7

Oxford applicants who are also applying to courses at Imperial College London and/or the University of Warwick should attempt the questions required by the Oxford course they are applying for.

Are calculators allowed for the MAT?

Calculators are not allowed in the MAT.

Which universities use MAT?

Oxford’s undergraduate degree courses in Mathematics, Computer Science and their joint degrees require the MAT.

Imperial College London uses the MAT for all of its undergraduate Mathematics course applicants.

For the Mathematics BSc (G100) degree or Master of Mathematics (G103) degree at University of Warwick, you are encouraged to take the MAT, STEP, or the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA).

STEP is used by the University of Cambridge, the University of Warwick and Imperial College London.
